3. Suffixes: -ful, -y, -ness - clas note

What is a suffix?
A suffix is a word part added to the end of a base word. It changes the meaning — and sometimes the spelling — of that word. The base word keeps its main idea; the suffix tells us how or what kind.

1. -ful = "full of"
Add -ful when something contains or brings a lot of a quality.

• care → careful (full of care)
• help → helpful (full of help)
• joy → joyful (full of joy)
• use → useful (full of use)
Spelling: -ful has only one "l."

2. -y = "having" or "like"
Add -y to describe something that has the character of a base word — often how something looks, feels, or the weather.

• rain → rainy (having a lot of rain)
• sleep → sleepy (like you need sleep)
• mess → messy (having a mess)
• sun → sunny (having sun)
Spelling: if the base ends in consonant + e, drop the e (shine → shiny). If it's a short word ending in a consonant, double the last letter (sun → sunny).

3. -ness = "the state of being"
Add -ness to turn an adjective into a noun — it names the quality itself.

• kind → kindness (the state of being kind)
• sad → sadness (the state of being sad)
• dark → darkness (the state of being dark)
• happy → happiness (the state of being happy)
Spelling: -ness doesn't change the base word — y stays (happy → happiness); just add it.

How they differ — the key point

-ful → the word gives or holds the quality → it makes an adjective (helpful, joyful)
-y → the word has the quality / is like it → it makes an adjective (rainy, messy)
-ness → the word names the quality itself → it makes a noun (kindness, sadness)
