3. What is a Compound Sentence?

A compound sentence = TWO complete sentences joined by a conjunction.
✅ Each side MUST have a subject + verb (makes complete sense on its own)
✅ Examples — Use comma:
The bird flew away, and the cat watched from the tree.
The clock struck midnight, but no one woke up.
She forgot her umbrella, so she got wet.
When to Use a Comma?
🔍 The Comma Test — 4 Steps:
1
Read the part BEFORE the conjunction
2
Ask: Is it a complete sentence? (subject + verb?)
3
Read the part AFTER the conjunction
4
Ask: Is it also a complete sentence?
➡️
If BOTH are complete sentences → USE COMMA

When is NO Comma Needed?
❌ No comma — second part is NOT a complete sentence:
She laughed and danced all night.
The leaves fell and covered the ground.
He sat down and rested for a while.
↑ "danced all night" has no subject — same subject "she" is shared
⚠️ Common Mistakes
❌ The princess sang a song and the dragon listened quietly.
✅ The princess sang a song, and the dragon listened quietly.
↑ Both sides are complete sentences → comma needed
✅ The princess sang and danced gracefully.
↑ No comma — "danced gracefully" has no subject (same subject shared)
