2. Phonics: diphthongs: ou/ow ; oi/oy
What is a diphthong?
A diphthong is two vowels together that make a gliding sound ~ We slide from one sound to another.
1️⃣ ou / ow → /aʊ/
👉 Sounds like cow 🐄
ou: out, proud, house
ow: cow, now, towel
💡 Tip:
ou is usually in the middle of a word.
ow is usually at the end.
Exception: followed by l/n/el/er as in: owl, own, shower, flower (ow is in the middle).
2️⃣ oi / oy → /ɔɪ/
👉 Sounds like boy 👦
oi: oil, soil, coin
oy: boy, toy, enjoy
💡 Tip:
oi is usually in the middle.
oy is usually at the end.
Exception: oyster, Joyce (oy is in the middle).
Myths were passed by word of mouth — meaning people told these stories to each other by speaking, not by writing. A grandparent would tell a myth to their children, and then their children would tell the same story to the next generation. This is why we call them "oral" stories — they traveled from mouth to mouth for hundreds of years before anyone wrote them down!
Myths often feature gods, goddesses, heroes, and magical creatures. They were told to teach people about nature, right and wrong, and the values of their culture.
Examples of famous myths:
• Greek myths — Zeus, Hercules, the Trojan Horse
• Egyptian myths — Ra (the sun god), Anubis
• Roman myths — similar to Greek myths, with different names
• Chinese myths — the story of Nu Wa fixing the sky
What makes a myth different from other stories?
• Legend — Characters: Real-ish people. How passed on: Stories and books. Magic: Sometimes.
• Fairy Tale — Characters: Princes and princesses. How passed on: Books and media. Magic: Yes.
Key: Myths were shared by word of mouth for generations before they were written down. Today, we still read myths for enjoyment and to learn about ancient civilizations!Rule: Proper nouns = names that are specific = Always capitalize the first letter!
