What is a relative pronoun?

  1. A relative pronoun joins two sentences together.

  2. It gives more information about a noun (a person, place, thing, or time).

  3. Common relative pronouns for Grade 3: who, which, that, where, when, whose


2. Relative pronouns and how we use them

3. How to join sentences with a relative pronoun

  1. Start with two short sentences:

    • This is the girl. She won the prize.

  2. Find the repeated noun (the girl / she).

  3. Join them:

    • This is the girl who won the prize.


4. Easy patterns to remember

  1. who + verb (for people)

    • The teacher who teaches us is kind.

  2. which/that + verb (for things/animals)

    • This is the book that/which helps me learn English.

  3. where + subject + verb (for places)

    • That is the classroom where we have English.

  4. when + subject + verb (for times)

    • Summer is the time when we go to the beach.

  5. whose + noun (to show “belong to”)

    • He is the boy whose dog is very loud.


5. Common mistakes to avoid

  1. ❌ This is the girl who she is my friend.
    ✅ This is the girl who is my friend.

  2. ❌ This is the place which we play.
    ✅ This is the place where we play.

  3. ❌ He is the boy who his bag is blue.
    ✅ He is the boy whose bag is blue.
