A1 Week 15 worksheet #2

1.  Class Note: Gerund (for Grade 3)

  1. A gerund is a verb with -ing that is used as a noun.

  2. Form: verb + ing

  3. We use gerunds to talk about actions as things (activities).

1. Gerund = verb + ing

  1. swim → swimming

  2. read → reading

  3. play → playing

  4. draw → drawing

  5. cook → cooking

2. Gerund used as a noun

  1. As the subject (who/what does the action):

    1. Swimming is fun.

    2. Reading is my hobby.

  2. After some verbs (like / love / hate / enjoy / start / finish):

    1. I like reading.

    2. She loves dancing.

    3. We enjoy playing basketball.

  3. After a preposition (in / at / for / about, etc.):

    1. He is good at drawing.

    2. They are interested in singing.

3. Gerund vs. Present Continuous (very simple tip)

  1. Gerund = -ing word used as a thing (noun).

    1. Swimming is fun. (Swimming = thing/activity)

  2. Present continuous = be + verb-ing (action happening now).

    1. She is swimming now. (is swimming = verb)

We can use like + verb-ing or like + to + verb.
They are both correct and the meaning is almost the same.

Examples:

  • I like swimming.

  • I like to swim.
(They both mean: I enjoy swimming.)

  • She likes reading.

  • She likes to read.

  • They like playing basketball.

  • They like to play basketball.

4. A general rule:

When we talk about an activity:

I like swimming / dancing / singing / reading.

When we talk about a habit or something we often do:
I like to swim after school.
We like to play games on Friday.
