G3A1 – Pronouns Class note

Singular Pronoun

1.    A singular pronoun talks about one person, animal, or thing.

2.    We use singular pronouns instead of a singular noun.

3.    Words: I, you, he, she, it, me, him, her.

4.    Example sentences:
→ I have a pet dog. “I” is a singular pronoun.
→ Lisa is my sister. She is three years younger than me. “She” is a singular pronoun for Lisa.

Plural Pronoun

1.    A plural pronoun talks about more than one person, animal, or thing.

2.    We use plural pronouns instead of plural nouns.

3.    Words: we, you, they, us, them.

4.    Example sentences:
→ We have an exam tomorrow. “We” is a plural pronoun.
→ They are flying kites. “They” is a plural pronoun.

Personal Pronoun

  1. A personal pronoun shows who is speaking, who is talked to, or who/what we talk about.
  2. Words: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them.
  3. Example sentences:
→ The teacher is calling us. “Us” is a personal pronoun.
→ Jessica loves to cook. She made some cookies. “She” is a personal pronoun for Jessica.

Possessive Adjectives vs Possessive Pronouns

1.    Possessive Adjective: comes before a noun and shows who it belongs to.

It must have a noun after it.

Words: my, your, his, her, its, our, their

Example sentences::

→ This is my book.

→ Sam forgot his homework.

→ We love our school.

2.    Possessive Pronoun: shows who owns something.

It stands alone – there is no noun after it.

Words: mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, theirs

We usually put a be verb before a possessive pronoun: am, is, are, was, were.

→ This book is mine.

→ These bags are ours.

→ Those toys are theirs.

3.    Compare:

Possessive adjective + noun: my book, your pencil, our bags

Be verb + possessive pronoun: is mine, is yours, are ours

4.    Wrong example to show students:

This is mine book. (Cannot put a noun after a possessive pronoun.)

This is my book. / This book is mine.

Reflexive Pronoun

  1. A reflexive pronoun shows the action goes back to the same person.
  2. Reflexive pronouns usually end in -self or -selves.
  3. Words: myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.
  4. Example sentences:
→ Can you please introduce yourself? “Yourself” is a reflexive pronoun.
→ I washed the car myself. “Myself” is a reflexive pronoun.
