3. My View story: The Garden of Happiness

4. Suffixes: -ly, -ful, -less, -er, -or

What is a suffix?

  1. A suffix is a small ending added to the end of a word to change its meaning or how it is used.

  2. Example: quick → quickly; help → helpful; fear → fearless; teach → teacher; act → actor.

-ly (makes many adverbs: “how” something happens)

  1. Meaning: “in a ___ way.”

  2. Spelling tip: If an adjective ends with y, change y to i + ly (happy → happily).

  3. Examples:

    1. quick + ly → quickly = in a quick way

    2. quiet + ly → quietly = in a quiet way

    3. careful + ly → carefully = in a careful way

    4. happy → happily = in a happy way

-ful (makes adjectives: “full of ___”)

  1. Meaning: “full of” or “having.”

  2. Spelling tip: -ful is spelled with one l (careful, not carefull).

  3. Examples:

    1. help + ful → helpful = full of help

    2. cheer + ful → cheerful = full of cheer

    3. hope + ful → hopeful = having hope

    4. color + ful → colorful = full of color

-less (makes adjectives: “without ___”)

  1. Meaning: “without” or “lacking.”

  2. Spelling tip: Add to a noun to show there is none of it.

  3. Examples:

    1. hope + less → hopeless = without hope

    2. care + less → careless = without care

    3. power + less → powerless = without power

    4. fear + less → fearless = without fear (brave)

-er (person who does a job or action)

  1. Meaning: “a person who ___.” (In this lesson we mean the job/agent ending, not the comparative “bigger.”)

  2. Spelling tips:

    1. If the verb ends vowel + consonant (CVC), double the last consonant (run → runner; shop → shopper).

    2. If the verb ends with a silent e, keep the e (bake → baker; make → maker).

  3. Examples:

    1. teach + er → teacher = a person who teaches

    2. farm + er → farmer = a person who farms

    3. paint + er → painter = a person who paints

    4. run + ner → runner = a person who runs

-or (person who does a job or action)

  1. Meaning: “a person who ___.”

  2. Spelling tip: Many -or words come from verbs like act, invent, visit; students should learn common -or jobs by sight.

  3. Examples:

    1. act + or → actor = a person who acts

    2. invent + or → inventor = a person who invents

    3. visit + or → visitor = a person who visits

    4. sail + or → sailor = a person who sails

Quick compare: -er vs -or (jobs)

  1. Many jobs use -er (teacher, farmer, painter, driver).

  2. Some common jobs use -or (actor, doctor, inventor, visitor, sailor).

  3. Tip for kids: If you’re not sure, try -er first; if it looks wrong or is a known job word, it may be -or.
