Present Tense – 3rd Person Singular Verbs

🔹 What does it mean?

  • When we talk about he, she, it, or one person/thing, the verb usually changes.

  • This is called 3rd person singular.


🔹 The Rule

  1. Most verbs → add -s

    • He plays soccer.

    • She likes ice cream.

    • It rains in spring.

  2. Verbs ending in -ch, -sh, -ss, -x, -o → add -es

    • He watches TV.

    • She washes the dishes.

    • He misses his dog.

    • She fixes the bike.

    • It goes fast.

  3. Verbs ending in consonant + y → change y → i and add -es

    • He carries the bag.

    • She studies English.


🔹 Important Irregulars

  • He has a book. (not haves)

  • She does homework. (not do)

  • It is sunny. (not are)

Verbs + Both / All / Either / Neither


🔹 1. Verb TO DO

  • I / You / We / They → do

  • He / She / It → does

👉 Examples:

  • I do my homework every day.

  • She does her homework every day.


🔹 2. Verb TO BE

  • I → am

  • You / We / They → are

  • He / She / It → is

👉 Examples:

  • I am happy.

  • They are at school.

  • He is my friend.


🔹 3. Verb TO HAVE

  • I / You / We / They → have

  • He / She / It → has

👉 Examples:

  • We have a dog.

  • She has a cat.


🔹 4. Using “Both / All / Either / Neither”

  1. Both … and … = two things are true ✅

  • Both Tom and Mary are my friends.

  • I have both an apple and a banana.

  1. All of … = more than two things ✅

  • All of my friends are in the classroom.

  • I have all of the books.

  1. Either … or … = only one is true ✅

  • Either the dog or the cat is in the yard.

  • You can have either cake or ice cream.

  1. Neither … nor … = both are not true ❌

  • Neither Anna nor Ben is at school.

  • He has neither money nor food.
