2. Phonics: dipthongs: ou/ow ; oi/oy

What is a diphthong?

A diphthong is two vowels together that make one new sound.
We slide from one sound to another.

1️⃣ ou / ow → /aʊ/

👉 Sounds like cow 🐄

  • ou: out, proud, house

  • ow: cow, now, towel

💡 Tip:

  • ou is usually in the middle of a word.

  • ow is usually at the end.

  • Exception: followed by l/n/el/er as in: owl, own, shower, flower (ow is in the middle).

2️⃣ oi / oy → /ɔɪ/

👉 Sounds like boy 👦

  • oi: oil, soil, coin

  • oy: boy, toy, enjoy

💡 Tip:

  • oi is usually in the middle.

  • oy is usually at the end.

  • Exception: oyster, Joyce (oy is in the middle).
