The final exam is approaching. Please review the scope below to prepare well.

Oral Exam

Picture story: Tell a short story based on a series of pictures.

 

Listening and written Exams will cover all content from Week 12 to Week 17.

 

My View Stories and Practice Book

The following stories from our My View curriculum will be included in the exam:

1.       One Plastic Bag p. 373-395                              Practice Book p. 109-118

Please review each story’s genre, key elements, vocabulary, and comprehension questions.

Exam Format

l   Multiple Choice: Vocabulary recognition and story comprehension.

l   Short Answer: Definitions and questions about the main characters and story details.

 

Vocabulary (Week 12-17)

 3. Homographs – Class Note (Grade 3)

1. What is a homograph?

A homograph is a word that has the same spelling but different meanings.
Sometimes the pronunciation is the same, and sometimes it is different.

2. Types of homographs

A. Same spelling + same sound (most common in Grade 3)

  • bat (animal) / bat (sports stick)

B. Same spelling + different sound (harder)

  • tear / tear (two different sounds, two meanings)

3. How to figure out the meaning

  1. Look at the whole sentence.
  2. Check the words around it (clues).
  3. Ask: “Is it a thing, an action, or a time/number?”

4. Common homographs (easy list + meanings)

  • bat = an animal / a sports stick
  • ring = a piece of jewelry / the sound a phone makes
  • match = a game / a small stick to make fire
  • down = not up / soft feathers
  • foot = a body part / a unit of length
  • second = after first / a time unit
  • tear = water from eyes / to rip

5. Example sentences (show both meanings)

  1. The bat flew out of the cave.
  2. He hit the ball with a bat.
  3. I wear a ring on my finger.
  4. I heard the bell ring.
  5. This match is fun to watch.
  6. Use a match to light the candle.
